NC Teaching Winery wins three awards at All Canadian Wine Championships

There are three new reasons to raise a glass to Niagara College.

Three wines from the Niagara College Teaching Winery have won awards at the 2014 All Canadian Wine Championships. The NC Teaching Winery’s 2011 Balance Barrel Fermented Chardonnay ($19.15) won bronze in the in the Chardonnay Under $20 category; its 2012 Balance Sauvignon Blanc ($16.15) won bronze in the Sauvignon Blanc category; and its 2012 College Rosé ($12.15) won bronze in the Rosé category.

ᾮThis competition is less dependent on scores than how they stack up against other wines from the same country. The fact that a teaching winery has achieved three bronze wins in three categories bodes well for the future of our industryᾯ said Beverley Carnahan director All Canadian Wine Championships. ᾮThe Niagara College Teaching winery has shown consistency in winemaking throughout its participation in the ACWC.ᾯ

More than 200 wines were entered into this year’s competition where all wines are judged using a 111-point system. Wines are submitted sorted by category price and sugar wrapped and then assigned to the panel for assessment. Entries are scored using the 111 point scale examined for sensory components varietal character and structural soundness. Wines are judged by an esteemed panel of approximately 16 wine writers sommeliers and accredited wine judges from coast to coast and beyond.

“For the past 10 years the NC Teaching Winery the only commercial teaching winery in Canada has made it its mission to not only operate as a full-scale commercial winery that produces and sells its own wines – and has won numerous awards in the process – but to be vital teaching facility for our students” said Craig Youdale dean of the Canadian Food and Wine Institute. “The awards not only reflect the quality of the wines that we produce but the quality of wine education our students receive that prepare them to enter this exciting industry.”

A recognized leader in wine education NC’s hands-on Winery and Viticulture Technician diploma program exposes students to every aspect of the industry while its Wine Business Management certificate educates students in the business aspect of the industry. The College also offers a Certified Sommelier program and various wine-based Part-Time Studies certificates and courses.

Assistant winemaker Gavin Robertson who is also a graduate of the Winery and Viticulture program noted that the NC Teaching Winery consistently does well in competition and in critical review with wines made from the Chardonnay that is grown on the College’s own estate NC teaching vineyard. The bronze-winning 2012 College Rose is also made from Cabernet Franc grapes sourced exclusively from the College’s Teaching Vineyards.

“Because we have complete oversight of the grape growing and total control with regards to harvest decisions in a way that isn’t always possible when bringing in fruit from other growers and properties we are able to make the most of whatever a given vintage’s growing season has to offer” said Robertson.

The NC Teaching Winery which opened its doors in 2002 has won numerous awards over the years at Cuvee the All Canadian Wine Championships the Ontario Wine Awards and Canadian Wine Awards InterVin and more. In October 2012 it was announced as one of the Top 25 wineries in Canada in Wine Access Magazine’s Canadian Wine Awards Winery Performance report; named number 18 applauded for its excellent range of wines and its research as a key component.

The Canadian Food and Wine Institute located on Niagara College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus is the college’s centre for food wine and beer education. It is home to Benchmark the college’s teaching restaurant as well as the Teaching Winery and Teaching Brewery. It is also home to Junior Culinary Team Canada to represent our nation at the 2016 World Culinary Olympics.
