See what is growing on at the 45th Annual Plant Sale and Greenhouse Open House

 Spring has sprung at the Niagara College Greenhouse and the entire community is invited to attend.

The college will host its 45th annual Plant Sale and Greenhouse Open House on Saturday May 24 and Sunday May 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The two-day indoor/outdoor event will be held at the NC Greenhouse located at the College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus.

On Saturday May 24 there will be a variety of free workshops inside the greenhouse classroom led by NC faculty. Visitors can learn how to pump up their soil with compost teas prepare the perfect decorative planters incorporate edible flowers into their menu and create their own ‘man yard.’ NC’s ‘plant doctor’ will also be on site all morning long to consult with visitors about how to heal their sick plants.

Saturday’s event will also feature a Plant a Bean activity for children outside in the greenhouse courtyard where they will learn how to construct their own bean plant to take home (1 to 2 p.m.). College tomatoes will be sold from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (while supplies last) and a barbecue will be held (11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) with proceeds to be donated to Niagara College’s Rankin Run Team. Live entertainment will be on site throughout the day.

The plant sale will continue on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include a barbecue to support NC’s Rankin Run Team (11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.).

“As this wonderful college tradition continues this year’s event will be a great opportunity for the community to pick up plants during the peak planting season gain valuable information from our knowledgeable faculty and students and have fun along the way” said Sandy Herkimer of NC’s School of Environmental and Horticultural Studies. “It also provides our students with a chance to interact with the public at a greenhouse event.”

The NC Greenhouse is located at the College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus at 111 Taylor Rd Niagara-on-the-Lake. Students cultivate plants year-round that are sold to the public and used to beautify the campus grounds. All plants grown by students and all plant sale revenues are used to support educational programs at the college. Workshops: Saturday May 24

The Plant Doctor is in: 9 a.m. until noon

Consult with NC’s ‘plant doctor’ Olga Piedrahita about your sick plants. She will be on hand throughout the morning to offer knowledgeable advice to help heal your plants and help identify plant pests or diseases.

Pump up your soil with compost tea: 10 a.m. (20-30 minutes)

Horticulture professor Bill MacDonald will demonstrate how to make compost tea to give your soil the nutrients it needs to grow the perfect garden.

Preparing the perfect decorative planter: 11 a.m. (30 minutes)

Dena Gavin Horticulture faculty will host an interactive workshop showing various combinations of plants to fill every size planter to create perfect accents to driveways yards pools and decks.

Preparing edible planters: 2 p.m. (20-30 minutes)

Dena Gavin will host an interactive workshop educating visitors about edible flowers and how to incorporate them into your daily diet or menu for entertaining. Recipes will be on hand.

Create your ‘man yard’: 3 p.m. (20-30 minutes)

Landscape faculty Mike Hoekstra shares his expertise on how to create the perfect ‘man yard’ complete with barbecue fire pit or outdoor oasis. Perfect for singles who don’t know where to start with their landscaping or those eager to create a functional oasis for their families he will provide advice and design samples for easy maintenance beautiful yards and gardens.
