Niagara College School of Business marketing students traveled to Montreal on Feb 9-11th to compete in the Vanier College BDC Case Challenge, a national business case competition that showcases the skills of top marketing students from across Canada. Niagara’s team included Hayley Parker, James Sanchez and Cameron Tharby, second year students from the Sales and Marketing 2 Year Program.
Niagara’s team worked hard over the last month, impressing their coaches Professors Malcolm Howe and Terri Champion with their commitment and dedication to training for this prestigious event.
Competitors from across Canada meet annually in Montreal for this 2 day case competition where marketing students showcase their business and communication skills as well as their abilities to work under pressure. Competitors have 3 hours to read and analyze a business case, develop a marketing strategy and then deliver a convincing presentation to a judging panel of industry experts and an audience of their peers. Niagara’s team did an outstanding job, winning 4th place in their division with a strong presentation that highlighted their creativity and knowledge of marketing strategy. This national event gives students a chance to apply their analytical, creative and presentation skills in a professional environment and demonstrate the key success factors needed to succeed in the marketing industry.
As we see the 2017 fall term draw to a close, we would to thank and acknowledge the 17 semester exchange students who chose Niagara College as their study abroad destination, the majority of who studied into programs from the School of Business & Management.
These students, pictured above, joined us from our academic partners around the globe – from Europe, to the Caribbean to Latin America; infusing the spirit of travel, adventure, and study abroad into our NC classrooms.
As we wave off our new NC alumni, who will return home later this month to complete their degrees at their home institutions, we are happy to know that they enjoyed their time studying at NC and exploring Niagara. We are even happier knowing that they experienced at least one day of the wonderful winter wonderland that is Canada and our beautiful Niagara.

This weekend Nicholas Conlon, our 3rd year business student from the International Commerce and Global Development program earned a spot at the 2017 Global X-Culture Symposium in Washington D.C.
50 students representing 21 different countries were chosen out of 40,000 X-Culture participants to compete in a case competition for their corporate consulting challenge.
After a long three days, Nicholas and his group were chosen for the best proposal and won 1st place the competition.

Dr. Khara won X Culture best Instructor award in February of this year.

The Sales and Marketing Program was proud to present Fernando de Gama Olievera with the 2017 Tyler Santing Spirit Award on June 9, 2017. Tyler was an exceptional student whose endearing personality and spirit had a huge impact on his classmates in the Sales and Marketing Program. He proudly represented Niagara College at the Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition, winning 2nd place in the Advertising Campaign Case Event and also was involved in our ENACTUS Club. Tyler will always be remembered for his high energy, enthusiasm, smile and his ability to make others smile. The Tyler Santing Spirit award was established by a donation from a student in his class, and supported by the Santing family. The award is meant to recognize a student in Sales & Marketing that has contributed positively to the program culture and environment, just as Tyler did.
Fernando de Gama Olievera, the recipient of this year’s award, brings a high level of energy and enthusiasm to every day. As an International Student coming to Niagara, he embraced the School of Business learning experience from the very start and quickly became an active participant in the classroom environment as well as the School of Business as a whole. He volunteered as a Student Assistant, in the International Department, represented Niagara as a participant in the Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition Team, and even donned our school mascot costume at the competition. While at school, Fernando worked several part-time jobs in sales and marketing, at the same time as maintaining excellent grades and above all else, always coming to campus with a smile on his face. His positive approach and way at looking at life is infectious and added a lot to the program culture for students in the Sales & Marketing program. We are also happy to report that not only is Fernando a graduate of the Sales and Marketing Program, he is now also a colleague, as he was just hired by Niagara College as the International Student Recruitment Regional Manager for the Americas.
Fernando received his award from Rick Santing, Tyler’s father and was also joined by the two previous Tyler Santing Award recipients, Fred Donkor (2015 Winner) and Marc Calaguiro (2016 Winner).
The School of Business and Management is excited to announce that professor Terri Champion’s latest publication, MGMT Principles of Management 3rd Canadian Edition is hot off the press.
Champion co-authored the Canadian edition of this introductory management textbook with professor Ike Hall from British Columbia Institute of Technology. The text is designed to provide students with little to no management experience to think like managers. It covers key topics like ethics and social responsibility, innovation and global management.
The text is paired with Nelson Publishers MindTap, an interactive learning system that provides students with online resources to enhance their interpersonal, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, preparing them for roles as future leaders.
As part of the development of this new edition, Champion wanted to ensure that students using this text were able to hear first-hand how some of the management topics discussed in the book were being applied in the real world of business, and from business leaders they could identify with. “I felt it was important for students to not only have insight from current managers in business, but also to be able to gain inspiration from individuals who not so long ago, were at the same point of their academic careers,” she explained.
Recent graduates from college business programs across Canada were interviewed and profiled in the opening vignettes of each chapter, providing their own thoughts on the topic at hand. Niagara College School of Business alumni Chris Sinclair (vice-president of Brand Blvd) and Mike Cameron (general manager of Newcap Radio) were both featured in the textbook.
“It was a great opportunity for our alumni to not only share their insight into the world of management but also to discuss the key takeaways they gained from their business education at Niagara College and help readers to imagine the possibilities for their own career paths,” said Champion.
Champion has worked at the College’s School of Business for almost 23 years. She has co-authored the first and second edition of the MGMT Management Principles texts, as well asSmall Business Management (Nelson Publishers) fifth and sixth editions.

We want to congratulate Dr. Navjote Khara, MBA, PhD Coordinator of Bachelor of Business Administration, International Commerce and Global Development program, who is awarded the Best 2016 X-Culture Instructor! It is a big deal and a great honor for the School of Business & Management, Niagara College.
A total of 133 instructors and co-instructors teaching at 123 universities in 39 countries whose students took part in the 2016 round of the X-Culture competition. A total of 124 variables were considered when selecting the Best Instructor Award recipient.
X-Culture is a partnership of 450+ International Business professors from around the world. The students are put in global virtual teams and they work on real-life international business challenges presented by real companies. Over 4,000 MBA and undergraduate students from 111 universities on 6 continents participate in X-Culture every semester. Over 30,000 have taken part in X-Culture so far. Working in Global Virtual Teams of about 6, a team member from a different country, the students spend a semester solving real international Business challenges presented by our corporate partners.
The best students are invited to where they meet their team members and top managers from the client company. X-Culture just won the Wharton’s 2016 Re-Imagine Education Award in the Nurturing Employability category.

The results provided by Niagara College students under the leadership of Prof. Cosmo Girolamo have allowed us to focus our efforts on the Brazil market.
